Housing Works!

Housing Works is one of my favorite organizations of all time – it’s a community action organization that really brings the WOW factor to thrift store shopping!  It has become chic for fashionistas and stylists to volunteer their time for the shops, displays and loading docks, and the country’s most high-end designers consider it an honor to donate their goods to benefit this extremely important organization.

While they’re based in New York City, I consider Housing Works the ultimate model for what a community organization can accomplish, and live in hope that similar operations will spring up all over the country.  We can strengthen our communities from within, and get some great shopping in at the same time!   Through their glamorous thrift stores, the Housing Works Used Book Cafe, a ridiculous number of events and online auctions, Housing Works brings much needed relief to men and women living with AIDS through job training, health insurance, housing, advocacy, legal assistance and so much more.  If you’d like to read about who they are and their impressive list of accomplishments, click here:  http://www.housingworks.org/about/

Now onto the nitty gritty!

If you’re a resident of the Greater New York area, I STRONGLY suggest you sign up for Housing Works’ Newsletter – glamorous events and mouth-watering sales spring up so often, I’d have to dedicate a full blog to them alone just to cover it all!  Here’s the link:  http://www.housingworks.org/events/

They also have a fabulous blog, The Elegant Thrifter, which showcases high-end ideas for those of us who adore glamour:  http://www.housingworks.org/blogs/category/the-elegant-thrifter/.  With their legion of stylists, it’s a great resource for ideas to turn drab to fab!

Finally, Housing Works has a book out called The Find, by Stan Williams, and it’ll turn you on your ear with the possibilities inherent in shopping off the beaten path!

Even if you’re not a New Yorker, Housing Works is terrific inspiration, and an extremely worthy cause.  If you are a New Yorker, no excuses! Get on over there and do some good!

All best,
